Problem 1: no pressure or weak, watery shots
The most reported Barista Express problem, and the one with the highest false-alarm rate. Diagnostic order:
1. Check which basket you are in. The machine ships with both pressurized (dual-wall) and unpressurized (single-wall) baskets. Pressurized baskets fake crema and forgive coarse grinds; single-wall baskets do not. The classic trap: an owner graduates from the dual-wall to the single-wall basket, keeps the same grind setting, and suddenly gets fast, weak, pressureless shots. 2. Grind finer, in small steps. If the needle on the pressure gauge barely moves and shots run fast, tighten the grind setting one or two notches at a time. Problem 2: steam wand weak, blocked, or not steaming
Diagnostic order:

The CLEAN ME light is about coffee oils, not minerals. It triggers a backflush cycle using the included cleaning disc and a cleaning tablet. Follow the on-machine prompts; it takes about five minutes.
Descaling is about mineral scale, and the right frequency depends entirely on your water hardness. Breville's guidance ties the interval to the water hardness setting you configure on the machine; as a practical rule of thumb from owner communities, every 60-90 days is typical with moderately hard tap water, less often with filtered or low-mineral water.
